How to Stay Organized

Organized ClosetStaying organized is a problem for nearly everyone, but for moms it can be especially difficult.  In-between feeding the baby, driving your eldest to school, rushing to work and cooking dinner, how on earth are you supposed to stay organized?  Staying organized will help you accomplish your day-to-day tasks more quickly.  Below is a list of tips on how to help you stay organized.

1.  When you’re finished, put it back.  This isn’t just a rule for children, as it turns out.

2.  Systems are the key to staying organized.  Don’t just shove that book, folder, or pot back in any old location–have a specific place where each item belongs, and make sure that it always stays there.  (That way, you’ll actually be able to find things.)

3.  Storage space  This is where Ikea and Office Max come in handy.  Go out and buy some folders or plastic storage bins.  Then actually use them, and not in a well-I’ll-just-stash-whatever-I-can-fit-in-here-in-order-to-get-it-out-of-the-way.

4.  Do a weekly clean/re-organize session.  Life is messy.  Kids are messy, and sometimes, despite our best intentions, we just don’t have time to make sure that everything gets back to its place.  Once a week, go through and make sure that everything is clean and tidy.  Doing this frequently makes it  easier and less laborious for you.

Good luck.

Soft Pretzel Nuggets Recipe

Did you ever buy a soft pretzel from a stand in a big city or sporting event? Now you can make your very own! If you love to bake and have a fondness for soft pretzels, this recipe was made for you. These pretzels pair well with mustard, melted cheese and ice cream!

Soft Pretzel Nuggets

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 3 ounces unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil
  • 3 quarts water
  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 whole egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon cold water
  • Coarse sea salt

Directions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the water, sugar, yeast, and butter and mix with the dough hook until combined. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add the salt and flour and mix on low speed until combined. Increase the speed to medium and knead until the dough is smooth and begins to pull away from the side of the bowl, about 3 to 4 minutes. If the dough appears too wet, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Remove the dough from the bowl, place on a flat surface and knead into a ball with your hands.
  2. Oil a bowl with vegetable oil, add the dough and turn to coat with the oil. Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm spot until the dough doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425. Bring the water to a boil in a large pot over high heat and add the baking soda.
  4. Remove the dough from the bowl and place on a flat surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope measuring about 22 inches. Cut the dough into one inch pieces. In small batches (about 15 at a time), boil the pretzel bites in the water solution for about 30 seconds.  Remove with a large slotted spoon and place pretzel bites on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Make sure they are not touching. Brush the tops with the egg wash and season with coarse sea salt. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Remove to a baking rack and let rest 5 minutes before eating.

Microwave Potato Chips Recipe

potato slices picThe microwave; A life saver for TV dinners and warming up our beverages and left-overs. What would you say if I told you there is a recipe that exists that actually makes crispy potato chips – in the microwave? You’re probably thinking the same thing I thought when I found this recipe in Healthy Eats eats magazine about two years ago. The only potato I ever put in the microwave are Ore-Ida’s Steam N’ Mash potatoes, or, a quick baked potato. (Just a little F.Y.I.;  I am not a fan of instant potatoes-at all. But I have to hand to Ore-Ida; Their microwavable  Steam N’ Mash potatoes do not taste like instant potatoes. They are delicious.)

OK. Back to the microwave potato chips. Y-U-M! You will be delightfully surprised when you pull these potatoes out of the microwave. They are crispy, flavorful, and really taste like a potato chip! Microwaves tend to make foods soggy, right? How can a potato come out crispy like a potato chip? It does. This recipe is healthier than the potato chips in the grocery store and your family and friends will be amazed at how you made such a good potato – in the microwave! All it takes are a few simple ingredients, a microwave, a plate, and a good eye!

Microwave Potato Chips

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 pounds Yukon Gold or red potatoes, unpeeled, scrubbed
  • 2 teaspoons  extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Cooking spray

Directions

  1. Coat a large microwave-safe plate with cooking spray.
  2. Arrange as many potato slices in a single layer on the plate.
  3. Microwave, uncovered, on high until some slices start to brown, 2 to 3 minutes (depending upon potato thickness and microwave power).
  4. Turn slices over and continue microwaving until they start to crisp and brown around the edges ( about 35 seconds for very thin potato slices to 2 to 4 minutes for thicker slices.)
  5. Check frequently (You will need to turn over and rearrange the potatoes to avoid scorching)
  6. Transfer chips to another plate and allow to cool completely.
  7. Repeat process with remaining slices.

Mother’s Day Flowers

Thinking outside the box for presents doesn’t always turn out right.  How about, for Mother’s Day, we think inside and outside the box.  Is that possible?  Sure!

Inside of the box: Flowers.  Typical Mother’s Day present

Outside of the box: Flowers.  In a different form other than those that are given to us from Mother Nature or add a little twist to the real ones.

You can find small items that she likes and attach them to the vase that the flowers are in.  Pick up some mascara, candy, lipstick…etc.  She will be thrilled to see that you have remembered what her favorites are and that you bought her a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  Try bringing her out flowers with her breakfast, too!

Another gift idea that makes the flower arrangement less boring is to make your own arrangement!  If your mother loves to clean then here is a gift idea that is just for you!  Get blue and white flowers.  Any type of flower will do.  Go buy all of her favorite cleaning products that you always see her using around the house and fill up an entire basket.  Then, put the blue and white flower arrangement all through the basket so it looks the way you want it to.  You can add bows and different accessories if you would like to spiff it up a bit.

One of the last ideas that I have for you is to get a gift that has flowers on it.  A nice ring with your family member’s names on it is a wonderful idea.  It lets her know that the whole family picked it out and that they all appreciate her very much.  Other items can be found with flowers on them that would play a sentimental role on Mother’s Day.  Get her a pair of slippers with pretty posies on them that say GREATEST on one foot and MOM on the other.

You will get inspired to create your own ideas that involve flowers and then every Mother’s Day will be a breeze!

Ways For Moms To Make and Save Extra Money

With the rising prices of gasoline and everything in between, sometimes a full time job isn’t enough. Oh, if money only grew on trees! How many times a week have you said that to yourself or your children? Here are some simple ways to make a buck – in a sense. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to find another part-time job, but mindful ways to save the money you typically spend! There are also ways to make money by doing something you love. Imagine that! Making money working on a favorite hobby!  Call it “funny money”. The easy extra money that save or make may surprise you!

  1. Smoker? Break the habit! I know, easier said than done. After all, a cigarette makes your life so much easier to deal with in those stressful situations. A cigarette goes well with coffee and good conversation. That is all a state of mind. There is no drug in nicotine that is known to “calm your nerves”. A cup of coffee goes well with conversation, minus the smell of cigarettes on your clothing. Imagine how much better your coffee will taste once you break the habit? One of the biggest advantages besides potentially adding years t your life? MONEY! If you smoke one pack of cigarettes per day that averages out to an estimated $145.00 per month! That can be used for a car payment, a utility bill, school clothes, or a day at the salon! If you save that money up for an entire year, that is nearly $1800 saved. Hello, Disney World! Hello, contribution to a college tuition! The habit will be hard to break in the beginning, but think money! Most importantly, think family!
  2. Selling Crafts Online: If you are a “crafty mom,” you no longer have to venture out at 5 Am to make it to a local or long-distance craft fair or flea market! Your customer base can stretch across the world!. Sites like etsy.com give you the opportunity to sell your crafts, blog about your crafts, and network with other artists!
  3. Save money on coffee! truth be told, I pay $5.85 for my favorite latte at Starbucks. Honestly, I don’t have a $5.85 latte budget, but I have a hard time accepting that fact. Shame on me! However, here is an idea. Instead of dropping $2.0o-$6.00 for a java fix, ask your company to invest in a coffee machine and gourmet beans. If your employer is not prepared to do that, speak amongst your colleagues for a “chip in”. A monthly coffee fund will be much cheaper and it is more convenient!
  4. Avon? Mary K? If you love make-up, jewelery and all of the girly things that life has to offer, you know that AVON has been a staple in household beauty for reasonable prices! If you have a good circle of friends they can help you by distributing the AVON books in their workplace and to their families! AVON now offers online service, so you can email invites to people you know to browse the products and use you as their rep! Instead of spending money on make-up, shower gel, shampoo, jewelery and the things you love, the more you sell the more products you can earn for free!
  5. Paid focus groups – Go to a search engine and type, “paid focus group”, followed by the city you live in. How would you like to make an extra $75 in cash just for taste testing coffee or giving your opinion on baby strollers? Most focus groups pay IN CASH at the end of the session. All you have to do is drive to the area where the study is being conducted, review the product. cha-ching!

Make A Scrapbook of “The Firsts”

Scrapbooking can put you to work but it is also very therapeutic.  Using your imagination as well as getting in touch with your creative sign can help you relax.  Take a day away from the house and buy all of your supplies.  A great idea is to plan out exactly what you want to make the scrapbook into.  What colors? What theme?  If you have not gotten around to putting baby pictures all in one album, you should consider making a book of “firsts.”  Let your body relax as you think back to all of the “firsts” that your baby has had.  Taking a stroll down memory lane is always needed once in a while.
