Meet Andy, a triathlete who trains physically challenged racers. He gives them visual cues to the course. Kick-start a healthy pregnancy diet

If you’ve recently discovered you’re going to be a mom then the first thing you need to start thinking about is your diet. The foods you decide to eat during these nine months are crucial because they will effect how your baby develops and grows. So there’s no better time than now to kick-start a healthy pregnancy diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, dairy, folate and calcium.

As much as you might like ordering a pizza every weekend while you play at on your laptop or snuggle up with your partner on the sofa, it might be time to ditch this fast-food habit of yours and swap it for a healthier meal instead. When you’re pregnant there are certain foods you should and shouldn’t eat and below is a list of just a few to get you started.

Do eat:

This tasty fruit is loaded with folic acid which is vital for forming your baby’s brain and nervous system. In addition, avocados are rich in potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B6; these vitamins help to develop your baby’s tissue and brain, plus they help to curb morning sickness.

Packed with vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, broccoli is a superfoood recommended for pregnant women. It helps to build your baby’s bones as well as providing baby-friendly folic acid.

You can help your baby develop strong bones, teeth, and eyes by eating plenty of carrots.

Try to avoid:

Mouldy cheeses like brie and camembert, as well as blue-veined cheeses like roquefort. These smelly cheeses may contain listeria – a bacteria which could harm your baby.

Try to avoid eating raw meat such as blue steak and pate because they are possible sources of bacteria which could harm your unborn baby.

Tuna is known for being high in levels of mercury, so it’s best to avoid eating it during pregnancy.
